The month of February is a month filled with red. February highlights holidays like Valentine’s (and Galentine’s) Day as well as celebrations of the Chinese New Year. Additionally, February is American Heart Month, which focuses on the ways Americans can prioritize heart health. Red is an emotionally intense color, with varied and complex meanings. It draws the eye and calls attention to itself; making it a fun, vibrant color to use throughout your home in many shades. 

Symbolism and Meanings of Red 

Red is filled with various emotions. As a color that demands attention it is often associated with passion, power, and call to action. It is highly energetic and stimulates the viewer, drawing the eye towards it in a dramatic way. Red is often associated with love, however unlike the color pink, it symbolizes a more intense and lust filled romance filled with passion. However, red and its connections to love can also have a negative connotation, with deeper shades sometimes representing jealousy and anger. 

Beyond the connection to love, the color red has many positive draws. It is seen as a confident color, filled with excitement, vibrance, and power. However, red also is a color used for caution (think red stop signs on the road). Red can denote something dangerous and aggressive, making it a color that can quickly shift from a positive feeling to a negative one. 

Fun Facts about Red

More so than other colors we have featured, red has many physical effects on the body. Red is known to increase hunger and appetite, making it a color commonly used in marketing food companies. In addition to the association with hunger, red also draws our attention, making it a common color used by companies to draw customers in and make purchases (think about the red letters reading “SALE”, they never fail to allure us). Red is also a color with a long wavelength, making it often appear closer than it is and drawing the eye towards it. Red is also the color that humans first perceive after black and white.

Beyond the physical effects, red has symbolic meaning throughout many cultures and religions world wide. In the Christian faith, red is often associated with the Blood of Jesus Christ, appearing in textiles and art dating back for centuries. As far back as the Paleolithic period, red clay was used to protect the dead as they traveled into the afterlife, protecting the body from any evil spirits it may encounter on the way. Red also has roots in the celebration of Chinese New Year, believed to bring good luck, fortune, and prosperity into the New Year.

Since red is a very powerful color, it is important to consider this color as an accent piece so as to not overpower your room. Play with varying shades of red: pinks and softer red may be better in larger quantities in your decor than a vibrant bright red. Red can be a great color for small spaces, adding depth and drama without overpowering the whole home. Pops of red throughout common spaces add a feeling of luxury. However, traditions that were once frequently practiced and common knowledge in many homes seem to be an art lost in the past.

Steps:

1. Set your placemat 
2. Place dinner plate in the center of the placemat
3. On the left of the plate: napkin with the dinner fork on top

4. Place the bread plate on the upper left corner of the setting with the butter knife lying horizontally on top 
5. On the right on the charger: the dinner knife closest to the place with the spoon sitting on the outside
6. Place the water glass on the upper right corner of the setting with the red wine glass behind it followed by the white wine glass

Domanda Design’s parent company, Design Pool, has selected white as the 2022 Color of the Year! Kristen Dettoni chose white to offer a sense of reflection and renewal as we enter a new year with new opportunities. Read on to learn how to capture the sense of optimism and positivity this color can offer in your home.

Color Meaning

The color white is generally associated with positive feelings of peace, hope, and clarity. White is often considered a neutral color that can evoke feelings of cleanliness, sophistication, and simplicity helping you feel refreshed. It evokes feelings of new life and optimism: offering an opportunity to feel as though you have a clean slate to start anew. 

However, there are some negative connotations with this color as well. When used in excess white can feel cold and unfriendly, creating a sense of emptiness. A large amount of white can feel a little boring and impersonal when used in excess, especially in the home. 

Using White to Refresh Your Space 

Although white in excess can cause your home to feel a little cold and impersonal, when used in certain ways it can add a refreshing quality to your spaces. White is a good base color for walls in any space.From there, pops of color can be added to add variety and character to your space. Additionally, white can be used to accent elements of your home that you want to highlight. It is often used in bathrooms to add a sense of cleanliness as well as on ceilings to reflect light and help rooms feel larger.

Fun Facts about White

White evokes feelings of positivity and renewal in Western cultures, one of the reasons it may be a color often worn by brides. However, white was not always worn during weddings in Western cultures. Although the first white wedding dress was recorded in 1406, it is believed that the color was popularized by Queen Victoria in her wedding in 1840, where she wore a white lace gown breaking with tradition. White brings about positive feelings in Western cultures, but many Eastern cultures associate this color with death and sadness, often used in funeral and mourning rituals.

When you think about the holiday season, there are distinct colors that come to mind connected to the holiday that you celebrate. However, how often do we stop to think about where these colors came from? Why do we have such strong connections in our minds between these colors and our holiday traditions? For many holidays there is not one direct answer. Read on to learn the history and fun facts connected to these holiday colors. 

Christmas: Red and Green 

The use of red and green to represent the Christmas holiday is a link that goes back centuries, and doesn’t have one direct connection. The colors connect back as far as the celebration of the winter solstice and the Celtic tradition of decorating with holly plants. The holly plant is a small evergreen bush characterized by red berries and spiky green leaves. This plant was believed to bring good fortune and was often used as decoration around the home, a tradition that carried on into other Christmastime celebrations. In the Christian religion holly plants are said to represent the blood of Christ (symbolized by the red berries) and the Crown of Thorns (the holly leaves). 

However, a more modern connection between these colors and the Christmas holiday is the depiction of Santa Claus. Pulled from various traditions, the depiction of the Santa known today began with artist Thomas Nast who created an illustration of Santa for the cover of Harper’s Weekly beginning in 1863. However, according to Arielle Eckstut, co-author of The Secret Language of Color, this depiction of Santa really took off in 1931 thanks to Coca-Cola. The company hired artist Haddon Sundblom to create an illustration of Santa for their advertising campaigns, bringing the image of a red and green jolly Santa into the average household and cementing the colors of Christmas into modern day popular culture. 

Hanukkah: Blue, White, and (sometimes) Silver

The main colors associated with Hanukkah are blue and white. These are the two colors found in the flag of Israel officially adopted by the country in 1948. These colors connect further in Jewish culture with a religious connection as well: both colors appear in the tallit or Jewish prayer shawl. The tallit is white with stripes of blue originally dyed with blue ink from a sea snail. This shade of blue (tekhelet) has theological connections to the Torah and is meant to be a reminder of God’s presence in Jewish religious practices. There are universal associations with these colors as well: white symbolizing purity and peace and blue connecting to faith, wisdom, and truth. 

In addition to white and blue, silver is sometimes incorporated as a color in Hanukkah celebrations. This is believed to be due to the popularity of silver menorahs.

Kwanzaa: Red, Black, and Green 

There are three colors associated with Kwanzaa: red, black, and green. Each color is connected to the seven candles (Mishumaa Saba) used in the celebration of Kwanzaa, with each color having a distinct symbolic meaning. Red symbolizes the blood shed in the past. Black symbolizes the people of African descent around the world. Lastly, green symbolizes the land of Africa itself. These colors are used in various decorations through this holiday season, including rich textiles and other art objects displayed around the home.

Lisa Law, from Lisa Law Feng Shui, had so many good suggestions for keeping us balanced during the holiday season, that we asked her to weigh in on gift giving too. As fun as gift giving (and receiving) can be, there is also a lot of pressure surrounding it. It can be incredibly stressful for a lot of people. Maybe someone is feeling the pinch financially, doesn’t like shopping, or has strained relationships with their family. Whatever the reason, Lisa had good suggestions for taking the pressure off and feeling good about buying gifts again. When we do that, the fun and joy returns to gift giving! 

Buy local.

Businesses have taken a big hit these past two years. Show them the love by spending your money in your community. This can mean experiences, services, and consumables as well as stuff. Gift certificates to local restaurants, spas, theaters, the zoo are a fun way to gift an experience.

Support small businesses.

The global supply chain problems are highlighting how precarious it can be when we rely too heavily on fewer, bigger stores. Commit yourself to supporting as many small, independent businesses as possible. That doesn’t necessarily mean giving up the convenience of online shopping. Many of your favorite brick and mortar shops have online options and lots of independent businesses (like Domanda!) exist only online.   

Give a gift with a story.

When you support small, independent businesses like Domanda or buy local in your community, that purchase comes with the added benefit of a story. People will be moved you’ve taken the time to find a gift with a special meaning to it and will love hearing that story. The story will become part of the gift. Instead of picking up a tote bag and thinking “Who gave me this again?” They’ll think, “Oh right, this is the tote bag with the secret coded message!”

As we enter the holiday season, it’s important to acknowledge that along with the fun, this season can also be a stressful time of year for many people. Previously, we've asked Lisa Law, a certified Feng Shui practitioner and author from Lisa Law Feng Shui, for tips on how to use Feng Shui principles to get a better night's sleep and tackle our spring cleaning. We reached back out for tips on using Feng Shui to stay balanced this holiday season. As usual, Lisa had lots of great ideas!

 5 Tips to Stay Balanced 

Think about what brings you joy.

As you acknowledge this holiday season, do it in a way that is joyful to you. Decorate and celebrate in meaningful ways that make you happy. Keep in mind that may change from year to year. Just because you did something one way one year, doesn’t mean it has to be that way every year.

Help your space to flow.
If you’re going to be hosting guests, look at your space with fresh eyes. Where will people congregate, have meals, gather? Make those spaces as comfortable as possible. Keep in mind you may want to rearrange your furniture for a party. Flow for a party is often different than it is for everyday living.

Have conversations with your guests ahead of time.
This year, many of us are looking forward to seeing loved ones in person. Before you get together, talk to your guests to find out their comfort level regarding the pandemic. Are there any needs or anxieties to address or accommodate? Listen and be sensitive to people’s feelings without taking anything personally. If someone isn’t ready for large groups yet and would rather stay home, that’s ok.

Use the opportunity to evaluate what you have.
This is the perfect time of year to clean out your storage spaces. As you take out your holiday items, evaluate what you have. Are there pieces you haven’t used in a while? Donate them to a local charity. When it’s time to put items away, do so neatly. Keeping your items well organized will lower your stress level next year. Also, keep in mind this fundamental belief in Feng Shui, giving care and appreciation to items in our homes has a ripple effect. When we appreciate our items, that feeling of care and appreciation ripples back to us.

Don’t should yourself.
This time of year, it is very easy to fall into the trap of constantly should-ing yourself. Instead of saying, “I should buy this thing” or “I should decorate my house this way,” ask yourself “What do I want to do? What will make me happy? What is the most meaningful thing I can do for me and my family?” Come up with solutions that relieve stressful situations and remember those solutions may differ from year to year. Also, don’t forget to ask for help if you need it. Getting ready and cleaning up is exhausting. Most people are happy to help, but may not realize you need it. And if you're a guest, ask people if they need help. 

Everyone deserves to enjoy this time of year in ways that bring them joy, even the host!

When you think about cleaning your bathroom, the first places you think to clean are often your sink, toilet, shower, and bathtub. But how often are you cleaning your shower curtain and liner? According to Molly Maid, to keep your shower curtain and liner mildew-free, both the curtain and liner should be cleaned thoroughly once a month according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Selecting the Perfect Shower Curtain 

When selecting a shower curtain for your bathroom there are a few elements to keep in mind to get the desired look and longest life out of your curtain. First, consider the material. The most popular fabrics used for shower curtains are nylon and polyester because they are both inexpensive and moisture resistant compared to other fabric options. Cotton shower curtains provide an elegant look to your bathroom, however, they are less moisture resistant and may require more frequent cleanings. Cleaning and Caring for Your Shower Curtain 

Before cleaning your shower curtain, it is important to consider the material it is made of. All Domanda Design shower curtains are 100% polyester and safe to machine wash in cold water using a gentle cycle. Your curtain should not be dry cleaned or bleached. Be sure to hang dry or tumble dry on low to finish cleaning. In addition to cleaning your curtain, be sure to give your vinyl curtain liner a clean as well. This can be done by machine washing the curtain in cold water and hanging the curtain to dry.  Be sure to check the instruction tag on your shower curtains before cleaning to ensure that you do not damage the product.
