We are surrounded by a world of blue. Above our heads we see the pale blue sky, and, if you are lucky enough to live in a coastal community, you can see the deep blue oceans that make up the majority of our world. This tranquil color is the most common favorite color across the globe with a wide variety of shades evoking different meanings. Universally, all shades of blue are said to represent loyalty, peace, openness, trust, confidence, and protection. Light blue symbolizes peace, serenity, understanding, and healing while dark blue connects to knowledge, power, intelligence, trust, and authority. 

Influence of Blue in Culture

Blue makes an impact in various areas of our lives. In nature, blue appears in the water and sky but in little else. Blue eyed individuals make up only 8% of the world's population and blue rarely occurs naturally in the foods we eat (except for blueberries and blue/purple potatoes). In corporate culture, blue is one of the most commonly used colors in branding due to its ability to evoke feelings of trust and loyalty in the company. Blue has had its influence throughout history as well, as a color of wealth and importance. Historically, blue was one of the more expensive pigments to create since it was not commonly found in nature, therefore painters reserved the use of this color for important figures such as the Virgin Mary. 

In popular culture, blue makes a frequent appearance in beloved characters. Over the years we have been introduced to a variety of loveable all blue characters including The Smurfs, Cookie Monster from Sesame Street, Dory from Finding Nemo, and the Genie in Aladdin. Blue has had its influence in music as well making an appearance in many well known songs and in the musical performance art group Blue Man Group. 

Incorporating Blue in Your Home 

Blue has many meanings and values associated with it, but almost all of them connect to a sense of calm and relaxation. It is said to help us decompress. Studies show that blue lowers heart rates and blood pressure, helping with relaxation and sleep. For these reasons, blue is a great color choice for rooms where you want to relax, for example your living room or bedroom. Lighter blues are a great way to add color to your space, creating a calm, bright, natural atmosphere where various other colors can be incorporated to add variety. However, you may want to consider avoiding blue in your kitchen, as blue is often said to suppress appetite. Additionally, when used in excess blue can feel a bit cold and unfriendly, particularly when using dark shades, so start by introducing blue as an accent color!

This year at NeoCon, Domanda Design’s sister company, Design Pool, is debuting The Cryptology Collections. This collection of twenty patterns was inspired by code, the hidden messages they communicate, and the women codebreakers of World War II. Within the collection, there are four smaller groups, designed with specific markets in mind: upholstery, wallcovering, vinyl flooring, and acoustic panels.  

Founder and designer of this collection, Kristen Dettoni, had this to say about the collection. “When I first learned about the women codebreakers from this era, I felt an immediate kinship. Like them, I have worked with patterns my whole career and know their power to communicate in our lives. Through this collection, I hope to spark a conversation about what interior designers communicate in a built environment through their choices in materials and patterns.”

Codemaking and codebreaking may seem like a strange source of inspiration for a pattern designer. But it's actually not that big of a leap when you realize breaking codes is all about looking for patterns.

The spark of inspiration for this collection came after reading a book about Elizebeth Smith Friedman. Elizebeth was one the first people to realize you don’t need to focus on linguistics to break someone's coded message. Instead, you needed to look for patterns. She used these skills working for the US government during WWI, prohibition, and WWII. 

Using patterns to communicate connected with us.

This focus on patterns to communicate got us thinking about how we also use patterns to communicate as textile designers. And interior designers use our patterns in their material selection to communicate something in a built environment. Designers purposefully choose the right pattern for the need of the space.

Playing with this idea of patterns as communicators, Kristen started each design in The Cryptology Collections with a secret coded message. That line of code became shapes and patterns. It may look like a flower or a stripe, but each design has another layer of meaning. And those messages all pay homage to Elizebeth and the other women codebreakers of her era, whose work went unrecognized during their lifetimes. 

And now we’re bringing these patterns to Domanda Design.

The “Rules” of Design

When designing with throw pillows there are a variety of “rules” put in place by interior designers to help you start thinking about how to style your home. This article will focus on styling with a modern look: mixing patterns and textures with a focus on odd numbers.

The Key “Rules” to Creating a Modern Style with Throw Pillows: 

1. Choose a Color Palette 
   Choosing a color palette is an important starting place when styling with throw pillows. Try drawing inspiration for the main color from the objects and walls already in your room, then pick complementing colors from there. 
2. Select various pillow sizes and shapes 
   Mixing and matching pillow shapes and sizes is a great way to add variety to your look. Just keep in mind the size of your furniture and scale accordingly. Keep in mind the shapes and styles of throw pillows mentioned above. 
3. Choose three different types of patterns and texture 
   After defining your color palette, pick three different pillows with varying patterns and textures. Of these patterns, one should be dominant and include all of the colors in your color palette while featuring a larger image. The other two pillows can be simpler patterns in a smaller scale, plain colors, or just texture however they should continue to tie into your main color palette. 
4. Use Odd Numbers and Balance
   Select your pillows in odd numbers (groups of three) and balance your styles and patterns across the piece of furniture you are accenting. You want to make sure all of your pillows aren’t piled on one side of the sofa. 

Breaking the “Rules” with Customization

Now that you’ve learned the rules of styling with throw pillows, break them! Designing your home is an individual experience, and should reflect your personality and style rather than sticking to the rules. Customizable decor is a great way to break the rules and find styles that match your personality, including throw pillows and other items around your home. In a world forever changed by the COVID-19 pandemic, now more than ever there is a focus on sanitation. While we often think about wiping down surfaces and using hand sanitizer to prevent the spread of bacteria, tote bags should be part of our cleaning regime. Domanda Design totes are 100% Polyester both outside and in the lining with cotton handles. Because these items are printed, we suggest that you dry or spot clean only. But what does this mean and how can you dry clean from home? Here’s how: 

Spot Cleaning: 

Spot cleaning simply means only cleaning visible stains and spots by hand. This can be done by pre-treating stains with laundry detergent mixed with warm water and then scrubbing by hand with a terry washcloth or soft bristle brush. You should then rinse your tote and allow the bag to air dry.

Dry Cleaning at Home: 

If you are using your bag often or to transport food, you may want to consider cleaning your bag more often and thoroughly. This can be done by mimicking the dry cleaning process at home. Follow the steps below from RealSimple.com to keep your bag looking fresh without damaging it:

1. Hand wash your tote bag in a clean sink - use a small amount of delicate detergent mixed with warm water
2. Gently swish the bag in the detergent water and allow it to sit for 20 minutes
3. Drain detergent water from the sink and gently press the tote against the side of the sink to drain water from the fabric 
4. Re-fill the sink with clean warm water and rinse 
5. Drain the sink again and gently press - do not squeeze as this may harm the fabric or dye 
6. Allow tote to air dry on a flat towel or drying rack 

Whatever means you choose to clean your bag, it is important to remember that proper care and maintenance can keep your tote bag looking fresh for years to come while also preventing the spread of bacteria and viruses.

Yellow: the universal color of happiness and warmth. We see yellow surrounding us every day in nature, the warm rays from the golden sun beaming down onto yellow sunflowers surrounded by the buzzing of bees hard at work. This cheerful color is used to get our attention due to its high visibility, making an appearance on our street signs, taxis, school buses, and even on caution tape. Yellow has roots in spirituality as well, connecting closely with depictions of sun gods throughout history and closely tying to the third chakra, the Manipura Chakra, which is said to connect us with knowledge and intellect. The energy and happiness of yellow can be seen throughout its many uses in life, such as art and design, including in your home. 

Yellow’s Influence Throughout History 

Of all the colors known to us today, yellow has some of the oldest history as a pigment. The yellow pigment was used as early as 45,000 BCE and made from clay soil containing the mineral ochre. This pigment was then used in early artwork such as cave paintings. Yellow has continued to make an appearance in art as a color often used by painters including Picasso, Renoir, and perhaps most famously by Van Gough in works such as his series of paintings Sunflowers (1888). Yellow makes its appearance in other art forms as well, including showing its influence in music through songs such as Yellow Submarine by The Beatles and Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell. 

Today, yellow is still used in art but also has a powerful use in marketing. Softer yellows are commonly used in corporate marketing. The healthcare industry often pairs yellow with blues and whites on informational websites to encourage the reader to continue engaging with the resource. However, brighter yellows are used sparingly, typically in connection with children’s brands, bringing a sense of energy, optimism, and fun while grabbing the consumer’s attention.  

Introducing Yellow into Your Home Accessories 

As a color of happiness yellow can add a pop of freshness into any room. Yellow pairs well with its complement purple for a bold statement or with green for a more earthy feel. Duvet, Quilt, or Comforter - What’s the Difference? 

The words duvet and comforter are often used interchangeably. A duvet is a comforter but not all comforters are duvets. To confuse things even more, a duvet is sometimes referred to as a feather quilt. The distinction lies in their content, construction, and seasonal use. 

A duvet is a textile bed cover that’s often filled with goose or duck down and feathers, although sometimes has synthetic filler. The outside tends to be a solid color like white because an extra casing, or cover, for the duvet is commonly used. A duvet cover is much easier to remove and toss into the washing machine than a voluminous duvet. Duvets come in different weights known as togs or fill-power to help the buyer understand the amount of warmth provided and the appropriate season for their use. A good duvet is a valuable investment that will last for years to come.

A comforter is a lighter weight, exceptionally puffy bed cover usually with a patterned design. A comforter is often sold as part of a “bed-in-a-bag” containing a bed cover, pillow shams, and sometimes a couple of decorative pillows. In most cases, a comforter is made of synthetic materials like polyester and is meant to be appealing on the surface but not necessarily get a lot of use. Comforters are a quick, inexpensive way to brighten up your bedroom.

A quilt is also a flat textile covering for a bed. Quilts are lightweight like comforters but are often made of cotton fabrics. Mentioning the word quilt to most people brings to mind smaller pieces of fabric sewn together in a larger geometric pattern. Quilts were born from a sustainable mindset. They were a creative way to reuse fabric from other items like worn out clothing or food sacks. Even the invisible, inner warming layer between the two outer layers was often made of recycled textiles (and was even sometimes a hiding place for personal treasures like important documents or cash). A quilt is a unique way to personalize your bedroom.

Rebecca is a designer and illustrator based in Warwick, New York, whose work has appeared in books, as murals, and as garments through her own label Desert Qween. In addition, she teaches printmaking, 2D design, and figure drawing at St. Thomas of Aquinas College.  

We first worked with Rebecca at our sister company, Design Pool. There, she designed a contemporary collection of modern designs for the Proprietary Collection. The group, entitled 80's Reimagined, was inspired by the fun and wacky sweater patterns of the 1980's.

We loved her work so much; we invited her to collaborate on a collection of customizable decor for Domanda Design. Rebecca's fun and colorful sensibility is evident in her work as an illustrator and designer. This sensibility is perfect for an exclusive line of printed home accessories.

Inspiration for the Wildflower Collection came from nature.   

For this collection, Rebecca looked at the nature surrounding her for inspiration. "This past summer, I really learned to appreciate where I live since I couldn't travel anywhere because of the pandemic. The wildflowers were so insanely beautiful and literally everywhere. It has sprouted (excuse the pun!) a lot of inspiration." Rebecca's unique illustration style transformed the nature around her into bold shapes that created flowers, bees, ladybugs, and ants. These patterns are energic, optimistic, and feel like spring is springing.

Rebecca's designs are available in a range of products. 

In an interview over on the Design Pool blog, Rebecca told us she has always been "pretty obsessed with the idea of having my own home goods line!" We are excited to help make that happen! You can find Rebecca's patterns on pillows, placemats, tumblers, and pouches. We also have one wall clock design and a beautiful duvet cover.
