Tips and Tricks to Create Your Stress Free Space  

Select Your Space
There are many ways you can approach selecting a stress free space. While dedicating a whole room to relaxation is great, not everyone has the ability to do so. A stress free space can also be a quiet corner, a chair, or even an outdoor space. However, it is important to remember that our brains associate spaces with the activities we do in those areas, so, keep your stress free space out of areas where you might engage in work or any other activities you may want to take a break from.

Declutter
Once you select your space it’s time to declutter. Get rid of items you don’t need, upcycle items that you want to give a second life, and move items you don’t want in your stress free space to a new location. Store like items with like items and invest in decorative storage containers for things you want kept out of sight. It’s important to be sure to keep this space clean once you have decluttered. Consider setting aside one day a week for keeping this space organized. 

Play with Colors and Textures
When you begin decorating your interior space, start by thinking about ways you can layer in cozy colors and textures. If you have the ability to repaint your space, try changing your walls to a neutral palette (think shades of cream, gray, light yellow, light blues, and light purples). If repainting your walls isn’t possible, there are plenty of other ways to play with color and texture too! Add throw pillows made in various patterns and materials or use curtains and blankets to add pops of color and texture to your space. 

Add Elements of Art
Bring in elements of art that complement your personal style and bring positive, relaxing feelings into your space. Try wall art, sculpture, inspirational quotes, or family photos: anything that brings you joy! 

Sound and Smell
Engaging our senses of smell and hearing can work wonders when creating a stress free environment. Try using a candle or essential oil diffuser with your favorite relaxing scents and add in your favorite music or relaxing nature sounds for some background noise. 

Bring in Elements of Nature
Add elements of the outdoors into your stress free space. Houseplants and flowers are a great way to add life into your indoor space as well as a pop of color! You can also bring nature indoors by designing with wood, stone, or other natural elements. 

Find an Activity
Now that you’ve created a relaxing space, consider bringing in anything you might need to engage in a relaxing activity of your choice. Bring in books for reading, equipment for yoga and meditation, craft supplies, a journal, a puzzle, or a laptop for your favorite tv show. Having something around that you like to do can help your mind unwind as you focus on something other than your to-do list. 

Consider Unplugging from Technology
If you can, consider unplugging from all technology. However, if you want to listen to music or watch tv, be sure that any devices you bring into your stress free space have notifications turned off. It’s easy to get distracted by the outside world when work calls, but remember, it is so important to keep these activities away from your stress free space.

Purple has a history of being a complex color, holding many different meanings. A combination of the calming effects of blue and the intensity of red, purple can bring about a variety of feelings and effects on the viewer. Creative, mysterious, and regal, purple is a color you’ll want to feature in your home decor (especially since it is the Pantone Color of the Year 2022)! 

Color Meaning and Symbolism 

Purple is the color of wealth, royalty, and luxury. It is known to foster creativity, promote focus and introspection, and it has a calming effect. Purple is also seen as a color that symbolizes bravery and independence. In lighter shades, purple is a romantic color as well. However, like all colors, purple carries some negative meanings. In some cases it symbolizes sadness, particularly in some European cultures where the color is connected to mourning. Purple can also be viewed as arrogant, emotional, and childish, particularly when used in excess. 

History of Purple 

Purple has a long connection to the upper class and royalty. Purple dye was first made from sea snails in the Mediterranean. Since it took so many snails to produce even a small amount of dye, the color became valuable and reserved for the elite who could afford it. In some societies, wearing the color was even protected by law - you couldn’t be seen wearing the same shade of purple as the elite. In 1856, the color became more popular when a synthetic version of the dye was accidentally created by chemist William Henry Perkins. This shade of purple would later be referred to as mauve.

From there, purple took off throughout culture. Purple has often been associated with change throughout history and was the color of many movements, most famously the Women’s Suffrage Movement. In popular culture, purple has made many appearances as well. It has made its way into many famous songs including Purple Rain by Prince (who was also known to wear the color frequently). The color has also been a staple color for many well known movie characters including Ursual from Disney’s The Little Mermaid and Willy Wonka from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory to name a few. 

Designing with Purple 

As mentioned above, the color Very Pri Purple is Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2022 (not to mention another shade of purple was featured in 2018). With purple’s rise in popularity, now is a great time to consider ways you can incorporate it into your home decor! Depending on the shade you choose, purple can have many uses in interior design. Consider using bold deep purples as a statement color in your home through your furniture choices in your living room or as a pop of color in your pillows or curtains. Lighter shades of purple help with relaxation and are great for bedroom spaces. As summer fast approaches, one color encapsulates the happy, bright, and energetic quality of days in the sun: orange. Traditionally a color low on the popularity scale, orange is making a comeback in pop culture and bringing joyful energy into our hearts through fashion and home decor. Meaning of Orange  

Orange is a color that grabs your attention. In its traditional hues, orange is high-energy, vibrant, joyful, and positive. These traits make orange a very social color, often associated with youth, adventure, and creativity. A combination of the joy of yellow and power of red, orange brings about feelings of happiness while also dramatically drawing attention. Orange connects us to nature as well. We see orange in the sunsets of summer, the foliage in fall, pumpkins at halloween, and in a variety of fruits and vegetables all year round. 

Orange Throughout History and Across Cultures 

Before the 15th century, there was no particular name for the color orange in Europe. According to Arts & Collections it wasn’t until the first orange trees were brought to Europe from Asia that the name orange was associated with this lively color: before then it was simply called yellow-red! Orange has also been used in art as far back as tomb paintings by the Ancient Egyptians. Once a synthetic version of the color orange was produced into paint, the color became even more popular with painters, especially Vincent van Gogh who used the color widely in his paintings. 

Orange carries different symbolic meanings across cultures as well. In the United States, the color tends to be a sign of caution, often used in life preservers and construction equipment. In western cultures, oranges can carry negative feelings when used in large amounts, including excess and arrogance. However, the opposite is true in many other cultures and religions. In many prominent Asian religions orange is a holy color, worn by Buddhist monks in their robes and symbolizing transformation in Confucianism.

Orange carries many different meanings and layers of significance across the world, so how can you begin to think about designing with this complex color?

So You Want to Design with Orange? 

Designing with orange requires some careful planning. When used in excess, orange can be overpowering and bring a superficial feeling to your spaces. It’s best to start by using orange in small amounts like an accent wall or in home decor such as rugs, pillows, furniture, or wall art. It’s also important to consider the hue and tone you might use depending on the space you are designing. Traditional bright oranges work best in kitchens or entertainment spaces while peaches and pinky-oranges are best for cozier spaces like bedrooms. Spring 2022 Color Trends

Bold Colors

Yellow, pink, and green dominated many of the collections. Often used as a striking solid, these bold colors sometimes accented a neutral but often were used alone for a bright blast of fun color. Aqua, royal blue, and beautiful reds round out a full and vibrant spectrum. 

Soft Colors

Not everything was bold though, there were lots of softer colors and pastels mixed in. The pastels were beautiful rich colors, not the saccharine sweet pastels can sometimes fall into. They were not washed out or toned down, just softer. Butter yellow, soft blue, lilacs, and corals. 

Neutrals

For neutrals, black, white, and black and white together were still dominating, but complimenting the black and white were lots of bold, bright, happy colors. Even when used alone, the choice of textile or garment design offered a softer touch to keep black from being too harsh. Warmer neutrals, rich browns, and ivories were often what complimented the softer colors. Sometimes the lighter neutrals and ivories mix together on their own.

Another important trend on the runway this year was digital prints. Some designers are really embracing the possibilities that come with digital printing technology, including designers Thom Browne and Alexander McQueen. We can’t help but be excited about this trend, since digital printing is at the core of what we do!

Each year, Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd in the United States and worldwide. This year’s Earth Day theme is Invest in Our Planet. But what does this mean and how can we get involved? What is Earth Day and Why Does it Matter?

Earth Day is an American holiday now celebrated world-wide annually on April 22nd. Started in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson, Earth Day has helped draw attention to the importance of caring for our planet. It has helped lead to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other environmental laws in the United States. Earth Day is an important day that asks us to consider the impact we have on our planet and encourages everyone to make conscious eco-friendly choices in our day to day lives.

March 20, 2022: The First Day of Spring! As the seasons change and the weather gets warmer, it’s important to start thinking about the all important task of spring cleaning. Last year on the blog we helped you Use Feng Shui to Tackle Your Spring Cleaning. This year we are getting more specific.

Below is a list of 5 frequently forgotten items to be sure to add to your spring cleaning list and your regular cleaning cycle moving forward.

Shower Curtains and Liners

Before cleaning your shower curtain, be sure to consult the manufacturer's label and take a look at the material your curtain is made of. If you have one of Domanda Design’s customizable shower curtains which are 100% polyester, machine wash your curtain in cold water using a gentle cycle. Be sure to hang dry or tumble dry on low and do not clean your curtain with bleach or have it dry cleaned. 

For your vinyl curtain liner, machine wash on cold and hang dry or spot clean.

Duvet Covers

Duvets are typically made of cotton and filled with feathers, down, silk, wool, or polyfil depending on the style you have. If you use a duvet cover, you will not need to clean your duvet more than once a year. For instructions on cleaning your duvet be sure to consult the manufacturer's label as your duvet will require specific and different care depending on the materials it contains. Typical care includes machine washing on a cold and gentle cycle followed by hang drying. 

Duvet covers are much easier to clean and should be treated like a sheet and washed every one to two weeks. If you use a Domanda Design duvet cover, machine wash with cold water on a gentle cycle using mild detergent. Either line dry or tumble dry on low. Although some duvet covers can be ironed, Domanda Design duvet covers cannot be ironed and should not be bleached or dry cleaned. 

Throw Pillows 

Throw pillows can be designed one of two ways: with a pillow cover or without. Fortunately, our throw pillows are designed with removable covers, making them easy to clean on a regular basis. Remove the pillow cover and pretreat any stains with a soft cloth that has been soaked in warm soapy water. Then, machine wash the cover in cold water on the gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Air dry only and then replace the cover back onto your pillow. Ideally, a pillow cover should be cleaned every 2-4 weeks.

What about cleaning the pillow body itself? It is important to frequently dust or vacuum your pillow form and consider deep cleaning or replacing once a year. 

Water Bottles and Tumblers

Thoroughly washing your bottle or tumblers should be a task done after every use. Invest in a bottle brush to help with thorough cleaning and don’t forget to clean the lid and seals as well. For daily cleaning, fill your bottle with warm water and a small drop of dish soap. Scrub your bottle or mug using a bottle brush and allow it to sit. Rinse and either dry with a clean towel or allow to air dry with the lid off. 

If it’s been a while since you’ve given your bottle or mug a clean, consider a more thorough cleaning. Use a solution of half vinegar and half warm water in the bottle to help eliminate any mold growth or smells. Allow to sit overnight and rinse the next day. Towel or air dry thoroughly with the lid off to avoid moisture being trapped inside.

Tote Bags

Tote bags are frequently used items for a variety of purposes and are frequently forgotten in the cleaning rotation. Our tote bags are 100% Polyester with cotton handles and can be either spot cleaned or cleaned thoroughly at home. Spot cleaning is done to help clean visible stains. This is done by pre-treating the stains with laundry detergent mixed with warm water which is then scrubbed onto the stain with a soft bristle brush. Allow the solution to sit, then rinse the bag and air dry.

Enamel kitchen products are hardly new, they have been a part of household kitchens for centuries in various forms (some of which were not the safest for kitchen use). With this new trend come a lot of questions: are enamel bowls truly safe and how can you use them?

Are Enamel Products Safe for Food? 

Yes! Enamel bowls are safe to eat from. Although in the past enamel bowls were made with products such as lead that we now know are not safe for humans, our modern enamel bowls and mugs are completely safe to eat from.

What are Domanda Enamel Bowls and Mugs Made Of?

Enamel products are made from a variety of materials including iron, steel, or aluminum depending on the product you choose. Our enamel products are made from stainless steel, making them lightweight and durable. 

How do you Clean Enamel Bowls and Mugs?

Our enamel bowls are dishwasher safe or can be washed by hand using warm water and dish soap. This is true of most enamel products, although it is important to ensure that when handwashing you do not use an abrasive sponge or cloth. These items may scratch the surface of the bowl, exposing the metal or causing the surface material to chip. 

Can Enamel Products go in the Oven or Microwave?

Domanda Design enamel bowls and mugs are not oven or microwave safe. 

Which is Better for Food Storage: Plastic, Glass, or Enamel? 

There are pros and cons to each! Plastic is the most popular and often the cheapest choice, however, these storage containers tend to show the most wear and can absorb food odors over time. Glass containers are more durable and dishwasher safe but are easily breakable and should be replaced if chipped. Our stainless steel enamel bowls are eco-friendly, durable, dishwasher safe, and odor resistant. They even come with a translucent plastic lid so you can see the contents inside the bowl! However, unlike glass and plastic they are not microwave safe.
